Born in Scotland in 1838, John Muir and William Keith enjoyed a long friendship after meeting in Yosemite Valley in 1872. Keith is regarded as one of California’s finest late-19th century to early-20th century landscape artists, largely due to his popularity with the Big Four—especially Collis P. Huntington. Keith lived across from the UC Berkeley campus and befriended early conservationists, working with Muir to preserve Yosemite. These photographs were taken at the Hearst Gallery at St. Mary’s College.
